Assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.
Incident: Army Sgt. Michael P. Scusa died Oct. 3 in Kamdesh, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his contingency outpost with small arms, rocket-propelled grenade and indirect fires. Also killed were Sgt. Justin T. Gallegos, Spc. Christopher T. Griffin, Sgt. Joshua M. Hardt, Sgt. Joshua J. Kirk, Spc. Stephan L. Mace, Staff Sgt. Vernon W. Martin and Pfc. Kevin C. Thomson.

  I love you Michael with all that a mother can. I miss that wonderful big smile of yours and the way you would make us all laugh when you were telling story's to us. I have always been so very proud of you and you grew up to be a great young man, father and Hero. I just wished that we could of had more time. Time for you in enjoy your baby boy and have him know you. But I will promise that he will know all there is to know about his great daddy. I'm sorry that I cry a daily for you, my heart has a empty spot. I love you with the love of a mother and a father since I was both to you. I want to feel your wings wrapped around me and telling me "mom it's all good".I love you my baby boy. Love your mama

Phil worked for me when he volunteered to deploy to Iraq with the Joint Contracting Command. He was a great officer, a great friend and an incredible husband/father. He was just a couple of days away from returning from his deployment. I received an email from him on 5 April requesting to stay a bit longer so he could finish the job started. I had not yet responded to his email when I was notified by our Commanding Office on Easter morning that Phil had been killed. Miss you Phil!
