The Defense Department on March 28 identified the two sailors killed when an Afghan National Army soldier opened fire on them in northern Afghanistan.
Navy Lt. Florence B. Choe, 35, of El Cajon, Calif., and Lt. j.g. Francis L. Toner IV, 26, of Narragansett, R.I., were killed March 27 when the soldier fired on personnel assigned to Combined Security Transition Command — Afghanistan at Camp Shaheen in Mazar-E-Sharif, Afghanistan.
A third service member was wounded in the incident. Another appeared to be unharmed but was evacuated to a medical facility for evaluation. The Afghan soldier was reported to have killed himself immediately after the attack.
Officials report that this is the first time an incident like this has happened involving an Afghan National Army soldier.
