Incident: Army Sgt. 1st Class George Stanciel died Aug. 19 at Forward Operating Base Garry Owen, Iraq, of wounds sustained when the base came under mortar attack.

Services held for Miss. soldier killed in Iraq

GREENWOOD, Miss. — Sgt. 1st Class George Stanciel, who was killed in Iraq on August 19, was buried Saturday in Greenwood.

The 40-year-old Stanciel died of wounds suffered during a mortar attack. Stanciel was assigned to the 370th Engineer Company, 54th Engineer Battalion, 18th Engineer Brigade, Bamberg, Germany.

Services were held at Locust Grove Baptist Church with burial in Hudson Park Cemetery.

During the service, Brig. Gen. James O. Barclay III presented a flag to Mydersteen Canady, the soldier’s mother. He had also presented a flag to Stanciel’s widow, Shequita Stanciel, who also serves in the Army.

Stanciel was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. He graduated from Greenwood High School in 1989 and joined the Army right after that.

Stanciel was survived by his wife a son and daughter his mother...

  Sorry to hear was lost another good soldier. I was station with him in HI for our first duty station. Funny how time goes. He was a good friend. I will miss him.

I am the Chaplain, along with 1SG Obalabi, who made this notification. This was my fifth death notification in 2009. I remembered this one like it was yesterday, and I routinely think about 1SG Rowe’s wife and their son, who was seven at the time. This notification stands out to me because we had to come back to the house a few times because no one was home. We finally saw a light on around 2130, and I and 1SG O went to the door and knocked. 1SG Rowe’s wife answered the door, and it was clear that his wife was not registering why we were there. She did invite us, and we sat down at the table, and ISG O made the notification. 1SG Rowe’s wife said, "Are you sure?" She asked that question five times, and I finally said, " Ma’am, we would not be here if we were not sure. Her response to us was, I just spoke to him a couple of days ago, and he was supposed to come home next week. She immediately got up from the table, called her dad, and notified him. She collapsed to the floor and was crying. The 1SG and I just stood there. We were there for a while, and I remembered that when she asked me to pray, I had to pause a few times to keep from losing it. Cindy, I thought about your husband through the years, and I often wondered how you and your son are doing. I have often prayed for you and your family. And I thank your husband for his sacrifice to our country. I do hope you see this, and I will continue to pray for you and your family. Phil worked for me when he volunteered to deploy to Iraq with the Joint Contracting Command. He was a great officer, a great friend and an incredible husband/father. He was just a couple of days away from returning from his deployment. I received an email from him on 5 April requesting to stay a bit longer so he could finish the job started. I had not yet responded to his email when I was notified by our Commanding Office on Easter morning that Phil had been killed. Miss you Phil!
