EL CENTRO, Calif. — An 18-year-old Marine killed in combat in Iraq was remembered as a man whose short life touched many people.

“He brought life. He brought charm,” youth pastor James Whitehead said Saturday during services for Lance Cpl. Marcus Miguel Cherry at Christ Memorial Community Church.

Cherry was killed April 6 in the town of Ramadi, which has seen an outburst of violence between insurgents and U.S. troops.

Cherry was from Imperial, about 110 miles east of San Diego. He was the fourth Imperial Valley serviceman to die in Iraq since April 2003.

Cherry graduated from Imperial High School last year after having played on the varsity football team. He...

  Wow, Marcus Cherry there are so many great things to say about him.

I love him so much and he will always be in my heart, mind and soul. He will never be forgotten, he was a great friend.Marcus is in a better place and I know we will meet again. I know that he is watching over me.

Phil worked for me when he volunteered to deploy to Iraq with the Joint Contracting Command. He was a great officer, a great friend and an incredible husband/father. He was just a couple of days away from returning from his deployment. I received an email from him on 5 April requesting to stay a bit longer so he could finish the job started. I had not yet responded to his email when I was notified by our Commanding Office on Easter morning that Phil had been killed. Miss you Phil!
