Soldier from Georgia dies in Iraq

MARIETTA, Ga. — An Army private from Georgia was killed Monday in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi, the Pentagon said Thursday.

Jesus Fonseca Jr., 19, of Marietta was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division based at Camp Casey, South Korea. He died in a car bombing with two other soldiers.

His parents, Jesus and Gloria Fonseca, told WAGA-TV in Atlanta that their son graduated from Sprayberry High School and had been in the United States for 10 years. They said they would like to bring his body from Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to Georgia, then bury him in Mexico in accordance with his wishes.

As of Thursday, 1,368 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

At least 25 were from Georgia, and many others were based at military installations throughout the state.

You were 19 years old and gave your life for this country and the world...even if that was NOT the reason you really died. I know that's why YOU died. Thank you for your service. May you rest in peace and influence the world to a better place. I hope you can. You died too young. I am so sorry.

Phil worked for me when he volunteered to deploy to Iraq with the Joint Contracting Command. He was a great officer, a great friend and an incredible husband/father. He was just a couple of days away from returning from his deployment. I received an email from him on 5 April requesting to stay a bit longer so he could finish the job started. I had not yet responded to his email when I was notified by our Commanding Office on Easter morning that Phil had been killed. Miss you Phil!
