Thomas Edward Burnett, Jr., born May 29, 1963 in Minneapolis, MN, died heroically on September 11, 2001. Tom is survived by his devoted wife, Deena; his 3 beautiful daughters, Halley, Madison and Anna Clare; his parents, Tom and Beverly Burnett; his sister, Mary Margaret and her fiance, Chad Jurgens; his sister, Martha Jane and her husband David O'Brien and their children, Loren, Kathleen, Devin and Mary Margaret; and a large extended family and many friends. Tom is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson Senior High School, was appointed to the United States Air Force Academy, attended St. John's University and graduated from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota where he was elected President of Alpha Kappa Psi. Tom later earned an Executive MBA from Pepperdine University. At Thoratec Corporation, Tom provided leadership as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. He was very proud of his company and its compassionate mission. Tom's spirit inspires us, and his selflessness portrays the very noblest of American values. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, September 18 at St. Edwards Catholic Church, 9401 Nesbitt Ave. S., Bloomington. 6 PM Visitation; 7pm Service; reception following. Memorials to the Thomas E. May God Bless you for your bravery. You stood for freedom and heroism on Sept 11, 2001. It is still hard to believe that 9/11 actually happened in America in this day and age. You lived a very wonderful life. You and the rest of the crew and passengers on United 93 will never be forgotten for what you did. You stop evil and you saved lives. Rest in Peace.

I am the Chaplain, along with 1SG Obalabi, who made this notification. This was my fifth death notification in 2009. I remembered this one like it was yesterday, and I routinely think about 1SG Rowe’s wife and their son, who was seven at the time. This notification stands out to me because we had to come back to the house a few times because no one was home. We finally saw a light on around 2130, and I and 1SG O went to the door and knocked. 1SG Rowe’s wife answered the door, and it was clear that his wife was not registering why we were there. She did invite us, and we sat down at the table, and ISG O made the notification. 1SG Rowe’s wife said, "Are you sure?" She asked that question five times, and I finally said, " Ma’am, we would not be here if we were not sure. Her response to us was, I just spoke to him a couple of days ago, and he was supposed to come home next week. She immediately got up from the table, called her dad, and notified him. She collapsed to the floor and was crying. The 1SG and I just stood there. We were there for a while, and I remembered that when she asked me to pray, I had to pause a few times to keep from losing it. Cindy, I thought about your husband through the years, and I often wondered how you and your son are doing. I have often prayed for you and your family. And I thank your husband for his sacrifice to our country. I do hope you see this, and I will continue to pray for you and your family. Phil worked for me when he volunteered to deploy to Iraq with the Joint Contracting Command. He was a great officer, a great friend and an incredible husband/father. He was just a couple of days away from returning from his deployment. I received an email from him on 5 April requesting to stay a bit longer so he could finish the job started. I had not yet responded to his email when I was notified by our Commanding Office on Easter morning that Phil had been killed. Miss you Phil!
