DALLAS — A 22-year-old Fort Hood soldier from Bossier City, La., was killed in Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near her vehicle, the Department of Defense said.
Sgt. Julia V. Atkins died Saturday in Baghdad during patrol operations, the military said in a Monday news release. She was assigned to the 64th Military Police Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade.
“I’m kind of hurt but I’m also proud of my sister because she was serving her country, and my family feels the same way,” her brother, Larry Thomas, said Monday.
Military officials notified the family Saturday, Thomas said.
“They notified my dad and told him that she was leaving out of the compound in Baghdad, she was the lead vehicle. And they said she ran over a mine,” Thomas, 25, said.
